Richard Byrd is Professor of Theory and Composition, Composer-in-Residence, and trumpeter with the Faculty Brass Quintet at Eastern Kentucky University.  After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Trumpet Performance at DePauw University, he earned both his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Music Theory from the University of Kentucky.  He performs regularly with various ensembles in the Commonwealth and has performed with several prominent artists including Doc Severinsen, Al Vizzutti, Maynard Ferguson, Jens Lindemann, Louie Bellson, Byron Stripling, Bob Mintzer, Wycliffe Gordon, Victor Wooten, Aretha Franklin, Robert Goulet, Rosemary Clooney, Frankie Valle, Lou Rawls, Loretta Lynn, Carol Channing, Take 6, and the Manhattan Transfer.  In addition to producing his own solo CD entitled Portrait of a Trumpet, he is featured as lead trumpet with the DiMartino/Osland Jazz Orchestra on their albums Quotient and Off the Charts and with the Kentucky Jazz Repertory Orchestra on their album Flying Home.  He has been commissioned to compose music for various organizations and has ten of his works published by Eighth Note Publications, including Great American Fanfare for Trumpet Choir which was premiered during the 2012 Great American Brass Band Festival and featured in the January 2013 International Trumpet Guild Journal along with his featured article on Vince DiMartino.  Many of his students have won awards, performed as soloists with prominent bands and orchestras, and won national and international competitions, including Caleb Hudson, who recently joined the Canadian Brass.  He has been an artist-in-residence for the Kentucky Center Governor’s School for the Arts since 1983.
